Social-Emotional & BEhavioural Assessments
Our psychologists are highly skilled in completing mental health and diagnostic assessments for children and youth of all ages. A social-emotional assessment highlights a child or youth's level of social and emotional functioning while also identifying psychological factors impacting the child/youth's functioning (e.g., specific anxiety or mood disorders, ADHD, personality disorders, etc.). Results from these assessments allow psychologists to provide clear diagnoses and to make recommendations for support systems at home, school, and in the community.
When children and teens are struggling to succeed at school, a psycho-educational assessment may be recommended. Our psychologists are very experienced in completing these comprehensive assessments, which allow us to identify a child's learning strengths and challenges. Psycho-educational assessments often measure cognitive, behavioural, emotional, and academic functioning using a variety of psychological tests and procedures. Areas typically assessed include (but are not limited to):
- Intelligence (thinking and reasoning skills)
- Problem solving and conceptualization
- Executive functioning (e.g., planning and organization)
- Attention and memory
- Language skills
- Academic skills
- Perceptual and fine motor abilities
- Social-emotional functioning
- Adaptive functioning (life skills)
- better understand your child’s learning strengths and challenges
- provide practical suggestions to optimize your child’s functioning within home, school and other settings
- provide tailored recommendations regarding school supports and placement
Parenting in the Early Years
Our psychologists provide support, guidance, and information relevant to early childhood development and parenting challenges often encountered during a child's first few years. We can help parents with strategies for promoting social and emotional skills, addressing early anxiety or behavioural acting out, and strengthening the parent-child attachment. Parenting consultations can be offered as a stand-alone service, or in conjunction with therapy for you and your child.
